Xfinity Home security router settings with personal router behind it (working!)

Okay, so I had to do some digging on the Interwebs to figure it out, but here is what I did to get things working.

I have a Xfinity Home Secure Service with the touch screen with is paired with a Comcast supplied security router (Netgear WNR1000 v2 in my case) . They lock out all of the settings of the router, except one.

It should be connected like this:

First power on the modem; make sure it is synced first with Comcast.

Then connect the Comcast-supplied security router behind it (ethernet cable from modem goes to WAN/Internet port on the security router).

Then reboot the touchscreen device (settings->advanced settings->reboot touchscreen)

Once rebooted, ensure that it is connected to wifi (settings->advanced settings->connectivity->test connections, run through the test and make sure that it has a green checkmark icon for the wifi; cellular should always be working)

Next, plug your personal router to the security router (my security router had an yellow icon for the port-this should have an ethernet cable that goes to the WAN/Internet port of your personal router).

On the touchscreen, go to settings->advanced settings->connectivity->expose personal router to internet. Keep hitting next/back until your personal router shows up. Once it does, click next and you will be finished.

Everything should be working now as it did before. The tech that originally came to do the install was not very knowledgable about the network settings for people with their own equipment, but I was able to get more information from cheesman's post on this thread:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29244601-Equip-Home-Security-with-personal-modem-and-router

Which made total sense to me once I read it. All you are doing in the steps I outlined above is that you are putting your personal router in the security router's DMZ, which should be okay as long as your personal router is set up correctly with the default or personal firewall rules.

The way the tech had left it left the whole setup prone to crashing in minutes. The setup now as listed should provide your Internet/network the way it was before the Xfinity Home installation.

Hopefully this post will help others with getting it working.
