Consumer should be able to keep the adapter. The tech that helped me said they offer a self-install kit. The system guides you through - step-by-step on how to add the camera and it is done with the homeowner's personal code, not a technician code.
It took me a few tries but I got mine to reconnect (after way too many other problems and drama to relate here).
