Hi markallen1!
The energy saver feature (called EcoSaver) is designed to reduce the manually set temperature to a more efficient level, thereby using less energy. It's best to use this setting when there's no one home, so that in the winter pipes won't freeze, etc. It's not intended to be used as a setting while a home is occupied, but it certainly can be if the occupant finds that temperature to be comfortable. You can get more information on EcoSaver here: http://customer.xfinity.com/help-and-support/home-security/ecosaver.
EcoSaver will learn from your manual overrides and make smaller adjustments to your thermostat that can result in less energy savings. Activating Hold will override EcoSaver altogether and prevent EcoSaver from generating energy savings until the hold is turned off.
