All,
The home security router provides internet connection for the touchscreen and the cameras, It creates a 172.16.12.* network for all the hardware to be on. I think the main reason for adding this wireless router is to avoid complications with trying to use one of the many routers that the customers could have and ensuring they work properly with the hardware. From a network perspective, having double natting is not ideal.
Workarounds:
1. In my house I have the home security router as my primary gateway and all my personal equipment gets an IP address from that router. I have another Asus NT-66U attached to it in AP mode that I use for wireless for all my personal devices. Thus I don’t have double natting.
2. You can put a switch between your cable modem and two gateways and get a separate external IP address for each router. Comcast does charge extra for an additional IP address – you would have to contact customer support and work with them to get that setup.
3. You should be able to setup your primary router first, and then have the security router behind your primary main. I have not tried this but I know of a few people who have done it that way.
Thanks,
Shannon
