Xfinity Home Security Install Requires Additional Network Equipment (Router/Gateway)?

$

Can anyone provide any insight into what occurs during a visit/installation by a technician in order for Comcast to complete its Xfinity home security install/takeover, specifically the network component end of it? Note that I have an existing new, hardwired, security system in my dwelling that will be "switched over" to Comcast.

From what I gather, during installation an additional piece of network equipment (router or gateway) will be installed by the technician order to provide the dedicated network for the home security. Is this true? Is there any way around this?

I'm quite particular about my network/closet setup as I'm beginning to have reservations about having some unknown device BEHIND my (main) router and the potential headache that may ensue for all my other connected devices/components. Can the equipment be connected to an available port on my router instead?

If this is truly a requirement for the home security monitoring to work, it bothers me to know that I may have a device that I cannot monitor or control behind and/or on my network. Unfortunately, this may be a deal breaker for me.

P.S. I'm an IT professional looking for some clarity.

Thanks in advance!

FWIW, that's a router, not a "modem".

10 months of pathetic service - 50 minutes on the phone - WORST EVER!!!!!

No setting to pair window with home security

I'm trying to get my window sensor to pair with my comcast home security hub.

I found this:

http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/home-control/xfinity-home-control-help-with-your-door-and-or-window-sensors/

and this:

http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/home-control/xfinity-home-tutorials/

But they both direct me to log into the portal webpage: xfinity.com/xhportal and look for "Settings"

but this redirects me to:

https://www.xfinityhomesecurity.com/sp/homepage.html

My menu has:

|Main

| Security

>Arm

>Emergency Dispatch Setup

>Key Pad Codes

>Security Zones

| History

> All History

> Alarms

> Arms/Disarms

> Trouble Events

> Zone Activity

> Last 24 hours

| Rules

> Rules

> Contacts for Rules

| Apps

> Manage Apps

I really don't want to schedule a troublecall for this.

How can I sync the window sensor?

Please advise.

I have the same issue myself, I see lots of input here but if the unit is not in simple mode we have no true resolution. Does anyone else have a solution for this issue?

My understanding is that Comcast does not allow homeowners to install most devices. They only seem to allow: one camera (unless you have enhanced service that allws up to 6 cameras), thermostats, and appliance controllers. Anything that has to do with the 'security' end of the system is controlled by Comcast and their own technicians. They do not want the homeowner to screw up the security portion, and possibly delete alarm functionality, and open themselves to lawsuits.

In my opinion, after dealing with my system for almost 2 years, the only answer that you will be satisfied with is to interview the technician who comes out to 'take over' your system by Comcast...if you try to get an answer from telephone support personnel, you will not be satisfied. If you do not like what the installer tells you, you can send him/her on their way....let us know what happens...

Thanks for the reply.

I was afraid of that.

It made me wonder why those tutorial pages existed then?

I just received my X1 and bought a Logitech Harmony 650.  It works flawlessly and great customer support (1-866-291-1505).  I programed it online and everything worked, worth the $80, from Radio Shack.  I was even able to program one of the colored buttons for XOD.

Probably for the techs, since most do not know what they are doing...

Xfinity Home Certificate needed by insurance company

HI everyone, I hope I am not the only one that has asked this question but my search in the forum has been fruitless. My insurance company is updating their records and is requesting a "certificate" showing that we have a home security system. Otherwise they will no longer honor the security system discount we receive currently. How may I obtain this document? I have my permit from my local town office already as well as my Comcast bill showing that we have Xfinity Home. Thanks in advance for any assistance given.

programming question for CT-30 Thermostat

I had the thermostat installed a couple weeks ago and have set up the programming schedule for heating my home both on the device as well as via the portal on line. The issue I am seeing is that nothing happens after entering the programmed schedule. The unit will only run with the current set temp. The actual programmed information never takes over. The unit is not in "simple" mode. I have followed the included instructions explicitly to no avail. Does anyone have a resolution??

Delete zone/sensor

If I go to Sensors > Delete a Sensor/Zone it prompts for the "premise passphrase" and says it is available on the management portal.  I've tried every passphrase that I'm aware of.. the one I use with the monitoring service as well as my PIN for arming and disarming.

Is there some trick I'm missing?  I attempted to call customer service and after her "asking" 5 other people they concluded that I must need to have a technician come out because they don't know the code.

I just find it entertaining that I can add sensors, edit zones etc but I can't remove?

As we've been adding sensors we've had two times now where a glass break didn't take the double stick tape and fell.  (Yes we are mounting with screws now).

However in both instances the system didn't provide any alerting.  If I take the cover off a sensor it gives a tamper alarm... if the sensor falls to the floor and the battery pops out the system still thinks the sensor is fine for hours on end.

Am I missing something?

Home Security Modem into Bridge Mode

When my tech completed my install several weeks ago now he said that the modem needed a firmware upgrade (that was supposed to be out soon) in order for me to be able to place it into bridge mode.  Is there an update on that firmware availability so that I'm not double NAT'n my entire network and the security router and my router can both have public IPs?

Rjmmoon: Thank you for your response. I'm finding minimal information in another thread that appears to include some answers to my question, albeit inconclusively. Some of the posts may be antiquated but from my reading I'm gathering that my personal router will need to be placed into bridge mode to others stating that they've moved the required Comcast security router/gateway after the install. Whether it's true or not, someone posted in 2012 that Comcast would "be introducing a gateway that will allow users to fully manage and configure their network to their liking".

Full disclosure: I'm only looking to have the basic security and monitoring installed utilizing my existing security equipment, minus all the other bells and whistles that Comcast currently offers such as cameras/lighting controllers, etc.

You say that you've been "dealing" with your system for almost two years. I'm afraid of what that truly means. Do you have the required router/gateway on your network? As you have previously mentioned, it appears that I'm at the mercy of having a discussion with the technician performing the install. At this point I'm still waffling on whether to even keep my scheduled appointment and save myself the time.

my motorola SGB 6580 works just fine with comcast-- but after I call Motorola for support to fuss with it.

The Motorola support sucks-- it's beligerent and feeble so plan on 3 hrs to get 15 min of support.

but it does work.

thx

Thanks for the update. I did go on line and set the "program" via the portal but did not see any update until the next day. It may have updated sooner but I was just not paying attention to it until I was in that room and heard the Tstat "click" which indicated it was applying heat to the zone. I went and looked at the screen and all of my programmed information was in place and working fine. I guess in the end the best way to program the Tstat is via the portal and then to wait for it to update the unit. It will work... eventually:)
